Holy crap, Y'all. How is it February? Did ya blink and miss the first month of 2018... cause I sure did! Anyways, I thought it would be fun to kick off February with a fun series all about overhauling your wardrobe! If you're anything like me then you still have a closet filled with clothes you don't wear, are falling apart, or that you've had since high school. Actually, if you're really like me then you answered yes to all of the above. Yikes.
Something I realized this past month is that I do not have a wardrobe that's ready to transition into this next phase of life with me. So on a free Saturday in January, I went through everything. And I mean EVERYTHING guys. I can't even begin to tell you how many pairs of underwear I threw out. Anyways, one of the things I learned about Y'all from that reader survey I did back in December is that you're all in a very transitional period of life too! While we might not all be transitioning into the same phase of life, a transitional period is a great time to makeover your wardrobe.
Now, aside from actually just going through my clothes, I had NO idea how to actually start with a closet overhaul. As with most of the content on this blog, I try to write stuff that I myself would search for so if you've stumbled on this page because you think you're in need of a style makeover then stay tuned because this series is about to be LIT.
So what are a few reasons why you might need to ditch your old wardrobe?
1. You're jumping into the professional world
College grads, this one is you guys. When I left college, I didn't have a clue how to dress professionally (I mean I did, but I didn't) and I sure as heck didn't have a wardrobe to accommodate a 9-5 where most people wore a 3 piece suit every day. The good news is that if you're reading this, it's not too late for you. Transitioning from college to professional life is the perfect time to really start building a wardrobe that will work for you for years to come.
2. You're getting married
Raise your hand if you're getting married in the next year or so. Now double raise your hand if that marriage requires you to pull double duty in social situations. *Raises both hands* Whether it's hosting a block party, attending office parties, or military functions, getting married is definitely a transitional time when a wardrobe overhaul might be in order. Gone are the days of the slinky LBD for clubbing.
3. You're having a baby
This is a no-brainer time for a wardrobe overhaul. Carrying around a baby or chasing kiddos requires a far more practical type of wardrobe.
4. You're ready to really define your personal style
Aside from getting married, this was the other real reason why I decided that now was the perfect time for me to overhaul my wardrobe. If you are struggling to find outfits to wear or you've noticed a real shift in the style of clothes you gravitate to, this might be you!
5. You're moving
No one wants to move a ton of clothes they don't even like/wear anymore. Whether you need money or space, a big move can be a great time to overhaul your closet. I try to pare down my clothes every time I move, even in college!
I'm in! Now what?
Now that you've decided to overhaul your wardrobe, it's time to commit. First, you're going to want to get an idea of what you want your style to actually be. Do you want to be fun, flirty, and girly? Preppy and classic? Maybe you want to be a hipster and super trendy! The possibilities are honestly endless. I talked a little bit about defining your personal style in this post but let's take more of a deep dive into it this go around (ps: you might want to block off an afternoon for this):
Analyze your current closet
Take every item of clothing you own and pile it on your bed. I mean it. If you're going to do a serious wardrobe overhaul then you need to be intimately aware of every item that's in your closet. Pick up each item and ask yourself the following questions:
"Do I love this item?"
"Does this item make me feel confident?"
"When was the last time I wore this item?"
Once you've answered these questions you should be able to easily decide whether or not that item belongs in your new wardrobe. If you don't look and feel your best in it, then you probably shouldn't keep it around! Make three piles of trash, giveaway/sell, and to keep.
Find where you're lacking
Once you've analyzed your current wardrobe situation, finding the holes in your closet should be easy. Depending on what you're transitioning to/from you might need different pieces in your wardrobe. For example, I found that I am seriously lacking in blouses. Blouses are good for me to have in my closet because we have a lot of "casual" events that may not mean t-shirt and jeans casual. Plus, blouses are a great option to have for the office! One thing I don't really need, however, are dresses (even though I love to wear them in the summer). Assess your needs based on your life and what you currently have in your closet!
Search Pinterest and Instagram for inspiration
Depending on what type of style of wardrobe you're going for, you may want to look for inspiration of pieces to buy. I am a very visual person and so looking at outfits on Pinterest or Instagram really gives me a solid idea of the looks I want to create and what I want the vibe of my wardrobe to be. You can follow my Outfit Inspiration board to get more of an idea of what I'm talking about! (PS: Little secret, I use Pinterest to plan my outfit almost every day)!
