Happy Monday everyone! Today is pretty exciting because I'm introducing something new on the blog: Hometown Hits! I know life as an Army wife is going to lead me to many places I've never been before so I thought West Point was a perfect place to start this series. Each month I'll be feature one local bar, restaurant, or other attraction I love! I titled it Hometown Hits but feel free to suggest other titles for this series as I hope to continue it indefinitely! Now let me gush about my absolute favorite local eatery: Caffee Macchiato in Newburgh, New York.Read More
Y’all, how has another week come and gone already? I swear this year is f-l-y-ing by. On the one hand I’m totally okay with it and on the other I’m just like *insert wide eyed emoji here*. Happy Hour this week revolves mostly around my new love, bullet journaling. This is not the first time I’ve tried my hand at the bullet journal trend but this time I’m determined to stick with it. If you have no idea what a bullet journal is you can check out more about the whole bullet journaling system here. What started out as a quick way to plan has grown into a form of creative expression for those that use them.Read More
What is up my squad of lovely brides? Last week on Twitter I ran a poll to choose this week’s Wedding Wednesday post and 5 Things No One Told Me about Planning a Wedding won! Wedding Dress Shopping came in close second so go ahead and subscribe and follow me on social media because that will be coming soon as well (and boy, was that an ordeal!).
I have a bad habit of overestimating what I know. When Justin and I got engaged, I thought I had watched enough wedding related reality television shows to what there was to know about wedding planning. Well, I was wrong. Let’s chat about the things no one told me about wedding planning:Read More
Seriously, where did the summer go? I mean, if you’re reading this because you’re about to go back to college or back to school, then you’re probably thinking exactly the same thing. It’s been 3 years since I graduated from undergrad at West Virginia University and this past May, I finished up my Master’s Degree. Ever since leaving West Virginia University, I’ve found myself reflecting each year around this time on my undergrad life. In May I took a couple old posts on lessons I learned in college (the hard way) and turned them into a video but this time I figured it would be fun to talk about the things I regret NOT doing while I was in college. But there’s a bonus surprise that comes with this post: I wrote my first eBook!
When I was looking back on all the things I learned and experienced in college, I realized that there’s a lot of issues that no one ever talks about and I wanted to do something to help. So I gathered up a few of my old college related blog posts and wrote a few more things and created The Ultimate Girl’s Guide to College. Whether you’re trying to figure out what in the heck to do during Syllabus week or navigating dating, relationships, and sex, I hope The Ultimate Girl’s Guide to College will help you navigate your college years in some way (I know I wish I had something like this back then!). The best part is the eBook is totally FREE all you need is an email! You can get the eBook instantly to your inbox by signing up right below!
Now that that’s out of the way, let’s talk more about the things I regret not doing in college.Read More
I’ve talked a little bit about getting healthy and fitness on the blog but what you may not know is that I’m super lazy when it comes to working out. I also get SO BORED when my workouts are the same day after day. Anyone else have this problem? Between that and my busy schedule, if I’m going to stick to a workout program or routine, it needs to be easy for me to do at home.Read More
Today we are going to tackle one of the most important wedding planning decisions an engaged couple has to make: picking a wedding venue! Choosing the place where you will ultimately join together as a couple (FOREVER!!) is a decision you should never take lightly when it comes to wedding planning because your wedding venue is going to be a place you remember for the rest of your life. Your wedding venue marks a huge step in your relationship and you want to make sure that your venue is the best choice for your love story, budget, and guest list. If you’re new here, I got engaged in November and every Wednesday from now until sometime in 2018, you can find a new wedding related post! So far in this wedding series, we’ve already talked about what to do when you get engaged, setting your wedding budget, and figuring out your guest list so if you’re newly engaged (or even just in a relationship) save this post and check out a few of the others first!
Finding our wedding venue was almost a huge disaster. We looked at our first venue pretty much a week after getting engaged and because of that we really didn’t have a budget or any real idea of how much weddings cost in New York (and everywhere in general). Naturally, I fell in love with the first venue we looked at. Long story short, we didn’t book it right away because we didn’t have a budget and decided to look around at our options. Because the location where we wanted to get married is very specific, we were pretty limited on our wedding venue choices. I fell in love with the first venue so nothing we saw after that even came close to meeting the expectations set by it. While we ultimately ended up going with the first venue coming to the decision was definitely pretty stressful!
So how did we ultimately choose a wedding venue?Read More
Now I haven’t been everywhere, but West Point is easiestly one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been. Between the picturesque trees and flowers and the centuries old buildings, it’s pretty easy to get a good shot for the ‘gram at West Point. Whether you’re taking a tour with your family or visiting your cadet there’s a good chance you’re going to be taking a lot of pictures while you’re visiting.
When I first moved to West Point, I was obsessed with taking pictures of the place. I’ve since deactivated that Instagram account but if you were to scroll through my old Instagram feed you would see tons of pictures of different buildings, trees, statues… pretty much whatever I could point and shoot at using my iPhone camera. Let’s be honest, I’m still pretty much obsessed with taking pictures at West Point so I thought it would be fun to share what I think are the 5 most Instagrammable places at West Point! With the start of the academic year approaching and events such as the Acceptance Day Parade and Ring Weekend rounding out August, I figured now would be a great time to share these Instagram-worthy West Point locations.Read More
Alright Happy Hour has been kind of all over the place since I launched this blog but hey, isn’t that what a happy hour is for? But today we’re going to reign this girl back in and actually go back to the Happy Hour format that I started with. I can’t promise this won’t ever happen again (in fact, I can probably promise that it will happen again but hey) but we’re all about going with the flow here, am I right?
It’s about time Happy Hour included a drink recipe, right? Last weekend I went “home” to Morgantown, WV where one of my favorite restaurants is: The Boston Beanery. Cue the french fries and bleu cheese please. It was Friday and they were running a special $4 Orange Crushes. Yes, ma’am. Boston Beanery is kind of my mom and I’s thing and so is the Orange Crush. The best part is that you really can’t mess these babies up too much, no matter how novice a bartender you are.Read More
The Wedding Guest List is probably one of the most notorious wedding planning to-dos out there. Depending on the complexities of you and your partner’s family situations trying to determine who to invite and who to leave off the list can be a huge stressor for the happy couple. That’s why I’m bringing you Wedding Guest List 101: your ultimate guide to figuring out your wedding guest list!
To be honest, I was actually hesitant to write this post because our Save-the-Dates haven’t even gone out yet. However, one of the first things Justin and I did once we got into the thick of wedding planning was get our guest list figured out. We made the guest list a priority for a few of reasons. One, our wedding is a destination wedding for almost everyone we would be inviting. The travel cost alone for some of the guest list would be a huge factor in who could and couldn’t attend so we knew we needed to give people as much time as possible to save money and lock in affordable accommodations. Two, we needed to nail down our budget. In The Only 4 Steps You Need to Set Your Wedding Budget I go into a little more detail about why knowing your guest list is important for budgeting so I won’t dwell too much more on that here. Three, because we had already nailed down our wedding budget, I knew picking the guest list was going to be stressful for both of us. We knew going in that the cost of the venue we chose and the logistics of travel was going to mean that our wedding guest list would be small but that didn’t make coming up with the final list any easier. Pretty much, we just sucked it up and got it done, that way we could move on with the planning process.
There is a lot more that actually goes into determining your guest list than just putting names and addresses in an excel spreadsheet. Here are a few answers you might want to answer with your fiance and parents before diving into creating a guest list:Read More
I’ve written previously about depression in my Thriving with Depression post and today, I’m dishing some serious dirt on depression and relationships. Take a minute to do this for me: I want you to open up Google and type in “depression and relationships.” What do you see? A bunch of negative posts about how difficult it is dating someone with depression. At first, I was infuriated by some of these posts, especially this one. But then I realized not everyone is capable of dating someone who battles with depression.
Being in a relationship with someone who has depression is definitely not easy. It takes someone who can see past the dark days, who truly cares and loves an individual completely for who they are. I have a confession: before Justin, I truly thought that my depression made me unlovable. Even when I was on medication, I never really had control over my depression (let alone my anxiety). While I’ve gotten better at figuring out when I’m going into a depressive episode, it’s still difficult for me to pinpoint exactly when and how bad it will be. I’m so lucky to have Justin by my side in the dark days, but we didn’t just magically get to this place. Here are some key tips to keep in mind when dating someone with depression:Read More
Wow guys, I can’t believe it’s been a month (EXACTLY) since this blog launched! Thank you so much to everyone who has shown so much love and support for me getting back into this blogging thing. I like experimenting with these Happy Hour posts and I’ve recently gotten a lot of really great new makeup products so I figured what better time to do a little makeup routine for you guys?
Today I’m going to be sharing with you all of the products I use every single day in my 5 Minute Face routine. If you didn’t already know, I commute to work basically 20-30 minutes and I like to get as much sleep as possible. Between sleeping in and taking care of the dogs in the morning, I don’t have a lot of time to get ready. I know my fellow go getters and college girls can relate.
Coming up with your own 5 minute face routine is essential to making your mornings effortless. I have a lot of redness and don’t really feel comfortable going makeup free, especially when I’m off to work (no one wants to look like they just rolled out of bed) so this routine really helps me out with a boost of confidence in the mornings. Let’s get into it!Read More
Wow, wow, wow. I can’t believe I’m doing my 10 month wedding update this week for Wedding Wednesdays. It seems like just yesterday I was posting this Instagram about finally hitting the one year mark! ICYMI: You can read all about my NYC proposal story here to get a better idea of how long we’ve been engaged (November of 2016). We’re finally getting down into the real wedding planning so I thought it would be a great time to start doing these monthly wedding planning updates.
We have already accomplished a lot because of the fact that we’ve been engaged for a while. Justin and I knew we would be getting married fairly close to his graduation so we made sure to lock down our ceremony and reception venue pretty early on. Our venue also is pretty inclusive so there were a few things we don’t have to go out and look for such as caterers and a cake shop.Read More
Last week, I did something a little crazy. On Wednesday, I made the decision to buy a ticket to HerConference after one of my blogger besties asked if I would be going. I knew I couldn't pass up the opportunity to meet up with her and y'all, my cup is so full. There is something so rewarding and empowering about being surrounded by a group of like minded women. Not all of them are bloggers but we all have the same goals in mind: to write and to help people.
Some of you may not know this, but I wanted to be a journalist pretty much my entire life until I got to college. I had an unfortunate incident with a journalism professor that pretty much soured my taste for it. Had HerCampus been what it is now back then, I can see how my path would have been so much different.
So what is HerCampus? Check this snippet out from their website:Read More
Today's Happy Hour post is going to be a little different. One, I can't believe this is already the forth one of these posts! Y'all, the blog has been live for almost a month now and I can't tell you how much your support means to me. Yesterday I was freaking out a little bit about what I was actually going to write for this post, since I had no one to take pictures of me this week due to Justin being at home in Alaska for a few weeks.
Much to my surprise, I came home to a VERY large pile of mail at the door of my apartment. Huge thanks to the mail people who stacked it nicely for me. Small side note, I purchased all of this myself but their may be some affiliate links included in this post. The mail I was most excited about? My picks from the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale finally rolled in!Read More
Wedding Wednesday has seriously become my favorite day of the week! Anyone else? We’ve already talked about kickstarting your wedding planning and setting your budget so today I’m going to share with you some more resources you can use for wedding planning. I have a 25 minute commute to and from work everyday and I’ve found that music really doesn’t do much to keep me alert during this time. So I’ve recently found that Podcasts are a blessing in this department! I usually listen to true crime podcasts (you can look forward to a post on those as well too) but since today is Wedding Wednesday we’re going to be talking about my favorite wedding planning podcasts!Read More
Alright, I’m the first to admit that I am no gym expert by any means. Aside from a short health stint in college, the summer of 2015 was really when I found a love for working out. Specifically, I started running almost every day and sometimes I was even working out twice a day. So after passing along my quick healthy habits to start, I figured what better way to keep you motivated than to share my workout essentials for beginners?
Contrary to popular belief, you don’t need top of the line workout gear to get fit. I know, groundbreaking, right? It can be easy to get caught up in the fancy leggings and watches but they’re completely unnecessary. In today’s post, I’m going to outline what you actually need to start working out and I’ll even give my recommendations on where to splurge and where to save money when it comes to your gear!Read More
This week was a pretty blah week by all accounts. The only fun thing that I really did was go to a minor league baseball game on a whim because the West Virginia Black Bears were playing the local New York team, the Hudson Valley Renegades. Obviously, I had to show my pride for the great state of West Virginia and cheer on the Black Bears, even though I don't really like baseball... Definitely went for the beer. It was all around a fun night and Justin and I really enjoyed ourselves. Just goes to show that you never know what you're going to enjoy until you actually try something!
This is Happy Hour #3 and it goes without saying that you can check out the previous two Happy Hour posts they'll be linked down below! Now, let's get into my favorites for the week!Read More
Alright y’all, it’s time we had the talk. You know the one. Okay, maybe you don’t. Today we’re going to talk all about sitting down with your fiance and setting a wedding budget! Setting your wedding budget is probably one of the biggest steps in the wedding planning process and my goal is to make it as hassle free as possible. Wednesday’s are all about weddings around here so let’s hop right into the dirt!Read More
Y’all, Amazon Prime Day is here and you know I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to shout out some of the amazing deals that are featured! I’ve rounded up a few things I would buy (if I didn’t already have them) or stuff that I am going to buy for you guys in today’s quick bonus post. I’ve selected my favorite topics to choose from: Tech gear, Books, and of course, Women’s Fashion.
It goes without saying that this post obviously includes affiliate links. All proceeds from Amazon go directly to running this blog so thank you for your support!Read More
Y'all, I honestly do not know which I love more: the dress or this stone wall! I'm usually not a fan of high-low style dresses but I couldn't resist the darling details of this floral off the shoulder dress. I first purchased this dress from Red Dress Boutique, a popular online boutique, as an option for our engagement pictures back in April. While I didn't end up using it for that, the off the shoulder detail combined with the flirty high-low ruffled bottom makes this dress a perfect addition to any summer wardrobe.Read More
